March 16, 2007 - This page shows the lettered craters on the Moon from NASA Reference Publication 1097, NASA Catalogue of Lunar Nomenclature, by Leif E. Andersson and Ewen A. Whitaker, 1982. Some spellings have been changed to match the IAU-approved spellings of the parent craters. The information in the quad and map fields was gleaned from the parent craters and therefore could be incorrect. The map and quad information, although possibly incorrect, is included for the lettered craters because it might be helpful to the user in finding the general geographic location of the feature on the Moon. These fields will be updated with the correct information in the future.
Most of the lettered crater names on the Moon's nearside were initially approved by the IAU in 1935 and 1964, but removed from the database in 1973. At the 2006 IAU General Assembly, the lettered crater system for the lunar nearside and farside as shown in the NASA Reference Publication 1097 was approved. Although many of these features were originally approved in 1935, and 1964, the 'reinstatement' date of 2006 is recorded in the 'approval date' field of the gazetteer.
Thanks to Jonathan McDowell for providing the digital list of lettered craters. Johnathan's web page also provides a list of lettered craters that have been renamed.
See Satellite Feature in the descriptor terms page for additional information.
Names in parentheses are alternate spellings found in other lists or on various maps.
